SRT launches special services for PWDs, elderly
BANGKOK, April 6 (TNA) - In an attempt to provide conveniences to persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the elderly alike, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has announced that it will, from April 11, 2013, launch 10 special bogies for them wishing to travel to Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North and Nong Khai Province in the Thai Northeast.
A SRT spokesman told journalists on Saturday that the launch of the special bogeys comes just in time for the celebrations of Songkran Festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year, when the public will see compartments of third-class trains are converted to second class equipped with air conditioners.
According to the SRT spokesman, wheel chairs will be easily kept in a special section and PWDs and the elderly passengers can board the trains by themselves through the use of remote control, and, in order to assist the groups of vulnerable people, the SRT will also reduce fares by half throughout the year.
