Support for southern students

BANGKOK, May 13 (TNA) -- The Education Ministry enrolls 286 high school students from southern border provinces in famous schools mainly in Bangkok. Deputy Education Minister Surachet Chaiwong presided over a ceremony for the admission at Chaleena Hotel in Bangkok. He said the Office of the Basic Education Commission selected 108 students from Pattani province, 25 students from Yala, 72 students from Narathiwat, 31 students from Satun and 50 students from Songkhla. The students enroll for one school year in 54 famous schools including Suankularb Wittayalai School, Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) School and Samsen Wittayalai School in Bangkok as well as Kanlayanawat School in Khon Kaen province. Under the school support project, the capable but poor students were admitted to study at famous schools, expand their perspective on Thai society and learn harmonious co-existence of people from different ethnic backgrounds, religions and cultures so that they could later share their experiences to peers in their home provinces. On the same occasion, the deputy education minister presented a 45,000-baht scholarship to each of the admitted students. (TNA)
