Thai PM launches campaign on conserving waterways

BANGKOK, November 22 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has launched a public campaign on conserving and rehabilitating waterways in Bangkok, as part of her administration's policy on protecting the environment and preventing floods. Yingluck on Thursday presided over a ceremony to launch the public campaign at the Prem Prachkorn Canal, used for storing raw water for the production of pipe-water in the capital, during which a letter of intent on the conservation and the rehabilitation of the 50-kilometre long Prem Prachakorn Canal was also signed and effective microorganism balls or EM balls and enzyme ionic plasma were thrown into the canal to help improve the quality of the water. The prime minister thanked all parties for their cooperation on conserving and rehabilitating waterways in accordance with her government's guidelines on flood prevention and solution, noting that Thailand and water have co-existed since the old days with a total of 25 basins nationwide and more than 300 canals in Bangkok alone currently. The prime minister invited all sectors in the Thai society to carry on the national move on conserving and rehabilitating waterways as part of their livelihood, pointing out that water sources are also used for water drainage and for the development of the country's environmental-friendly tourist attractions in the future.
