Thai PM satisfied with ASEAN-US Summit
BANGKOK, February 17 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has expressed his satisfaction with the ASEAN-US Leaders Summit, which was wrapped up in Sunnylands, Rancho Mirage City of the California State on February 16 (local time), as it showed both sides' cooperation on solutions to problems and he had opportunities to present his government's stance.
At his hotel in California, the Thai prime minister told journalists results of this year's ASEAN-US Leaders Summit, in which leaders of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) were invited by US President Barack Obama to participate for the first time after the formation of the ASEAN Community (AC) on January 1, 2016.
The Thai premier said the concluded ASEAN-US Leaders Summit, which was in the friendly atmosphere, consisted of three sessions, the first of which concerned economic issues and technological application for national development, followed by the second session on a dinner conversation where issues on Southeast Asia, the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula and the roles of China were raised and the third session on regional security, human trafficking, terrorism and health issues.
"At the three sessions, I spoke on behalf of ASEAN and Thailand that we will continue to cooperate and the United States will be a strategic partner to help strengthen AC. I also proposed that actions be based on differences of each country. As Thailand is a world producer of farm products, I also proposed that Washington helps supervise the prices of farm products," the prime minister was quoted by a TNA reporter as saying.
Regarding security issues, the Thai premier revealed, participants in the summit agreed that they will cooperate closely because security woes, including terrorism and maritime safety, affect all.
According to the Thai prime minister, ASEAN plans to later have similar summits with Russia and China.
Prime Minister General Prayut, who is also Chief of the Thai army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), then left for Los Angeles to fly home and he is scheduled to arrive in Thailand on February 18 (Bangkok's time). (TNA)
