Thailand must improve its workers’ productivity

BANGKOK, Sept 14 (TNA) -- The labour minister has urged concerned parties to find ways to hurriedly improve the productivity of Thai workers as it is low at present. Labour Minister Adul Sangsingkeo made his remark while opening a seminar on ways to enhance workers’ productivity. He said that Thailand’s labour was facing a structural problem as the country was entering into an ageing society, births were declining, and workers were decreasing in number, had low productivity and had jobs that did not match their qualifications. According to him, 40% of Thai workers are in the agricultural sector and have the lowest productivity. The IMD World Competitiveness Center ranked Thailand 57th among 63 countries on workers’ productivity. About 150 academics and representatives of the government and employers and employees' organisations attended the seminar. The minister hoped ideas from seminar participants would help formulate labour solutions. (TNA)
