Thailand seeks accession to UNFSA

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) - The Thai government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has sought the accession to the 1982 UN Fish Stock Agreement (UNFSA) to show the Kingdom's determination to solve problems related to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU). Thai Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Busadee Santipitak, in her capacity as Director-General of the ministry's Department of Information, told journalists on Wednesday that the accession to UNFSA will benefit Thailand in terms of incorporating the Kingdom to the international mechanism established for the conservation and management of fishery resources, particularly those in the high seas. The spokeswoman said the move will also reflect Thailand's determination to promote and support the international accountability in fishery for the sake of sustainable global fishery resources. Besides, Thailand's accession to UNFSA is in line with the national agenda on determined actions towards the end of IUU issues. (TNA)
