Trade Mission To Myanmar For Promotion of ICT, Biotechnology, Renewable Energy - Minister

PUTRAJAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Maximus Ongkili will lead a trade mission to Myanmar for the promotion of ICT, biotechnology and renewable energy sectors beginning tomorrow until April 28. The trade mission is part of a series of promotions by the ministry to spearhead efforts to assist the private sector to access the regional markets in ICT, biotechnology and renewable energy sectors. "The Myanmar government is aggressively liberalising trade and increasing engagement, thus opening opportunities to regional economies including Malaysia. "These efforts are attracting a growing international audience, following political changes and transformation taking place internally," he said in a statement here Tuesday. He added that the trade mission was also to provide the platform for Malaysian science and technology companies to continuously engage the Myanmar private sectors. Ongkili said the expansion of cities, economic zones, business community as well as the consumer market in Myanmar would create a demand for a more sophisticated range of technological products and services. Malaysian companies participating in the mission are well positioned to fulfill this demand, he added. With a 54-member delegation comprising government officials and businessmen, the mission is a follow-up to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's visit to Myanmar earlier this month. Ongkili said the programme in Myanmar included a business session and networking meeting at Traders Hotel in Yangon on Friday. Myanmar Minister of Science and Technology, U Aye Myint is expected to open the business session where representatives from 30 Myanmar companies are expected to participate, he said. -- BERNAMA
