Turkish doctors succeed in face transplant

ANTALYA (A.A) - January 23, 2012 - Turkish doctors have succeeded in face transplant. Prof. Dr. Omer Ozkan, surgeon at Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the Akdeniz University Hospital in Turkey's southern Antalya, and his team succeeded in the face transplant, bringing a great prestige to Turkey in the world. In August 2011, Ozkan and his team performed the world's first ever uterus transplant from a cadaveric donor.  Speaking to AA correspondent, Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Israfil Kurtcephe said that Ozkan's successes boosted prestige of the university and Turkey. If Derya Sert who received a womb from a deceased donor gave a birth, it could bring first Nobel Prize to Turkey in health, he said. Prof. Ozkan told AA correspondent that if she had a baby, this child would be the Nobel Prize for them. "The most important and fantastic one is uterus transplant. But face transplant is a prestigious one. Only four or five countries perform face transplant in the world," Ozkan said. The teams of surgeons headed by Prof Dr. Omer Ozkan also performed Turkey's first double arm transplant in September 2010 and the world's first ever womb transplant from a cadaveric donor in August 2011.
