Turkish parliament speaker says Turkey needs a new constitution

ANKARA (A.A) - Turkey's parliament speaker said on Wednesday that Turkey needed a new constitution. Cemil Cicek said the constitution, adopted in 1982, was the only constitution that had survived for 30 years. "Turkey needs a new constitution, and we will write a new constitution at the end of our efforts," Cicek told candidate journalists at the AA News Academy in Ankara. Cicek said the constitution had been amended for 17 times in 30 years, and every amendment was made because of a social or state need. "This means that Turkey faced a constitutional problem every 13 or 14 months or once a month that it could not solve that problem without amending the constitution," Cicek also said.
