UN delegation visits Northern Town

Manama, May 10 (BNA): A delegation led by Assistant Secretary General, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs Saras Jagwanth paid an inspection visit to the Northern Town residential project. The delegation was accompanied by Housing Minister Basim bin Yacoub Al-Hamer, Assistant Undersecretary for Housing Projects Sami Abdulla Bouhaza’a. UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Amin El Sharkawi was also part of the delegation which visited the project, described as a model for new residential towns in Bahrain.The UN delegation concluded its visit to Bahrain as part of coordination and consultation about drafting the first Voluntary National Report to implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Bahrain will submit its first Voluntary National Report in July, to the high-profile political forum, run by the UN Economic and Social Council. The minister briefed the UN delegation on the multi-phased construction of the project which reflects the Government’s drive to build new modern residential towns in Bahrain, featuring all amenities as well as trade, health, educational and service facilities. The Government’s drive is also in compliance with the 11th objective 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 – on the construction of sustainable towns and human habitats. The minister briefed the delegation on stages of building the Northern Town, which is expected to accommodate up to 100m000 people who will live in more than 15,000 units. The massive project is on good track, with more than 3,000 units already completed.
