UN general assembly chief says Tunisia meeting on Syria is a start
ISTANBUL (A.A) - President of the UN General Assembly has said more international initiatives would follow a Tunisia meeting of the Group of Friends of the Syrian People which seeks an international agreement to end violence in Syria.
"Tunisia meeting is just a beginning. There are thoughts presented to the table. Syrian people appeal to the world and the international community for help and an end to the killings," Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser told a joint press appearance with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu after a tete-a-tete meeting on the sidelines of an international conference on mediation in Istanbul.
Al-Nasser said the UN Security Council proved to be unable to act on the Syrian issue, adding that a plan by the Arab countries needed to be supported to apply pressure on the Syrian government to "end torture and the killings."
Al-Nasser said he was set to visit Geneva on Sunday and hold a meeting with Human Rights Commission on the Syrian issue.
