UN-HABITAT Executive Director Confers With Iran's FM

Tehran, Feb 26, IRNA – Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UN Human Settlements Program ( UN-HABITAT) in a meeting with Foreign Minister here on Saturday discussed interested issues. According to the Foreign Ministry website, Salehi concerning the issue of housing security for all human beings said, “ I am glad to declare that Iran has done effective measures in this concern. Referring to the issue of increasing resistance of housing against earthquake, which is one of the priorities of HABITAT, Salehi said that Iran is located in an area with high possibility for earthquake, so government is trying to raise public awareness of tremor through media and observe necessary standards to build housing. Appreciating HABITAT bureau activities here in Iran, Salehi expressed Iran's readiness to expand activities of the bureau and transfer Iran’s experiences in construction and increasing resistance of houses against earthquake to others countries of the region. Juan Clos by appreciating Iran for cooperation with HABITAT said that difference between toll of victims of two similar earthquakes in Haiti and Chile indicated that, although is not possible to prevent earthquake, improving urban planning and paying attention to raise resistance of building can decrease consequences of natural disasters for human life./end
