US Congressman Praises Democratic System In Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 (Bernama) -- A United States (US) Congressman is all praise for Malaysia's democratic system and has discouraged US politicians from showing support to any party in Malaysia. Eni Faleomavaega said the democratic system in Malaysia took place smoothly and was left to the wisdom of the people to choose their own government. The representative of the American Samoa's At-large district in the United States Congress, said it was not fair to any American politician to support any party in this country. He said democracy in Malaysia was "going very well", adding that everyone needed to be sensitive to the enthusiasm of Malaysians, in terms of the electoral process and the process of selecting the leader. "I believe in the intelligence of Malaysians...the process will take place in peace and it is up to you to choose your own leaders," he told reporters after visiting Parliament here Thursday. Also present was former Malaysian ambassador to the US, Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis. Faleomavaega believed that relations between the US and Malaysian Government under Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak would continue to fly high. "I am here to show that we want to continue this growing relationship. This is a public statement of United States policy to the Government of Malaysia, we hope this good relationship remains," he said. Faleomavaega, who is in a sub-committee on Asia-Pacific in the Congress, said the US administration under President Barack Obama was currently focusing on the Asia Pacific region, particularly in terms of economic and security aspects. Earlier, Faleomavaega called on Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz. -- BERNAMA
