Verdict in political society secretary general case on June 16

Manama, May 20 (BNA): Advocate General Wael Buallay has confirmed that the trial of the secretary general of one of Bahrain’s political societies resumed today at the Higher Criminal Court.
The case was referred to the court following the conclusion of investigations by the Public Prosecution which led to the defendant being charged with promoting political change using illegal forceful means and threats, in addition to inciting non-compliance with the law. The defendant was also charged with publicly inciting hatred, an act which had disturbed public peace.
The charges were levelled against the defendant in full accordance with Bahrain’s Penal Code following investigations into recordings of public speeches and sermons that promoted extremist views which constitute a clear contravention of the law.
Evidence underpinning the charges also included public statements delivered by the defendant that incited violence and encouraged the use of force against the Kingdom’s authorities, referring to such acts as a religious duty.
During the trial session, the Public Prosecution reaffirmed the seriousness of the charges levelled against the defendant and requested that in accordance with the Kingdom’s penal code, the court issue the maximum penalty available.
The Advocate General confirmed that the defendant had been afforded full legal rights, and provided with the opportunity to meet with his family and legal team throughout the trial.
The Advocate General also confirmed that the court had heard from both prosecution and defence witnesses throughout the trial and that the recordings of the defendant’s public statements and sermons had been provided to the defence team, as well as the minutes of the trial.
The Advocate General added that the court had previously ordered all evidence presented before it to be shared not only with the defence team but also directly with the defendant while in detention.
The Higher Criminal Court set the next trial date to June 16 when the final verdict will be delivered. The defendant has been remanded in custody.
