Wellknown contorting hermits at Bangkok's temple rebuilt for public studies
BANGKOK, November 2 (TNA) - Wat Pho or Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Temple in Bangkok, long-time wellknown as the learning center for the traditional Thai massage, is rebuilding hermit sculptures in self-stretching postures to its original number of 82 as 184 years ago to then be restored by next year for free public studies.
The temple, located near the Grand Palace in the capital, and the Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, under the Ministry of Public Health, are working together to rebuild the contorting hermits from brass to showcase the traditional Thai healing art.
Currently, there are only 24 original hermit sculptures left for permanent preservation at the temple which cannot be moved or prevented natural damages.
So far, nine new brass statues have been finished and were anointed by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on October 31.
The remaining work was set to be completed by March 2017 for celebrations and for free public studies at the temple.
The hermit statues showcase the traditional Thai healing art, which combines stretching exercises, breathing techniques and meditation, to relax people's physical bodies and minds, while also faciliating their blood circulations, enhancing vitality and becoming self-healing in early stages of illnesses.
