Bernama Emerges Tops In Jawi Writing Competition And Sahibba

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- Love for Jawi helps an Arabic language sub-editor at the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) win a Jawi Speed Spelling competition organised by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry. Muhammad Mujahid Ishak, 24, beat 20 other participants representing several departments and agencies under the ministry in the competition which was held in conjunction with the National Language Month 2013. Every participant was required to spell 10 Malay words in Jawi (an Arabic alphabet for writing the Malay language) promptly and accurately. A Bernama representative also won the Sahibba crossword board game when Bernama TV Finance and Accounts chief Zainal Abidin Ibrahim, 42, defeated 23 other participants to emerge champion. The winners received US$155 (RM500) cash and a laptop each which were handed over by Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Jailani Johari at the contest which was held on Tuesday. The competition was jointly organised by the ministry, the Tun Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information, and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (Institute of Language and Literature). Mujahid said he was thankful at winning the competition which could be a platform for the officers and staff of the ministry and its agencies to learn and improve their Jawi writing. "I hope such competitions can be expanded to a higher level so that the current generation can better master the Malay language and Jawi writing," said Mujahid who joined Bernama in September. The winner in the Sahibba category, Zainal Abidin Ibrahim also agreed that the competition should be continued as the concept was interactive learning. -- BERNAMA
