Iranian lifeguard brought drowning girl to safety only to lose his life

TEHRAN,May 20(MNA)-- 60-year-old male lifeguard is credited with saving a young girl’s life from the Karkheh River that ultimately claimed his life. Karkheh is a river in Khuzestan Province that rises in the Zagros Mountains, and passes west of Shush (ancient Susa). The head of medical emergency of Shush said on Saturday that lifeguard heard the distress cry of a drowning young girl in the river Friday evening when he immediately plunged into the river to rescue her, but unfortunately after brining her to safety the river took the man’s life with it. After a few hours of search by a search and rescue team the self-giving lifeguard was found still alive, though after his transport to the hospital he was pronounced dead. Reza Memarzadeh has asked youngsters, especially those in the area, to keep away from swimming in open waters in general and in the Karkheh River in particular. After all, a few minutes of joy is not worth losing your life over it. Another reliable source also reported that a man, 27, died a few days ago in the Dez River in Dezful while doing his aquatic therapy in the water and so far there has been no news of him, although the search to find him is still on.
