PM To Visit Turkey Tomorrow At The Head of An Official Delegation

Baghdad / NINA /- Prime Minister Muhammad Al-Sudani will visit Turkey tomorrow, Tuesday, accompanied by a high-level official delegation.

The water file will be at the forefront of the talks between the two countries, and it will also include issues of borders and economic cooperation during the two-day visit, according to official sources.

It is expected that the Iraqi delegation will discuss a number of files, the most important of which is the border, water, political and economic files.

The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, had announced earlier that he would visit Turkey soon at the head of a delegation to discuss the repercussions of the water crisis and drought in the country, in light of the challenges that Iraq faces regarding the lack of water and the possible repercussions of that.

The Ministry of Water Resources stated in a statement that Dhiab received in his office the Turkish Ambassador, Ali Riza Guney, to discuss the bonds of joint cooperation between the two countries in all irrigation issues and fields, and to guarantee Iraq’s water rights and the challenges facing the ministry’s work as a result of climate changes, and the lack of water flows entering Iraq.

The ministry added in its statement that the minister explained the seriousness of the water situation in Iraq, which is going through severe scarcity conditions for four consecutive years that have not passed in the country since 1933, calling on the Turkish side to share the damage with Iraq and activate the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in the field of water.

For his part, spokesman for the Ministry of Water Resources Khaled Shamal confirmed that the country is currently suffering from a "large" deficit in water flows.

Shamal said that the increase in water reserves is linked to rainfall in the regions of northern Iraq, but he pointed out that the rains that fell this season "were not at a level that contributed to filling the dams."/ End
