17th anniversary of Presidential elections in Kazakhstan

Astana, 2 December 2008, (Khabar) - In terms of history, 17 years is not such a long period of time, but these were crucial years for Kazakhstan and will always remain as the most memorable. On the 1st of December, 1991 the people of the country voted for Nursultan Nazarbayev as the president of the country and this signalled the beginning of a long journey where success was achieved, difficulties were faced, but the were always overcome thanks to the flawless and far-sighted vision of its leader, who has been correspondingly acknowledged by the world community.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan:
- There are many years and decades to come. But this day will remain in the history of Kazakhstan as the day when our people for the first time in history had the freedom of choice and freely elected their president. I am fully confident as I travel all over Kazakhstan and become aware of the people’s attitudes. People will vote for a stable life, economic growth and freedom.

The institute of presidency which was launched in the young state lived up to its expectations many years in advance and in the context of the democratic division of various power-holding systems, but under the leadership of one person who has chosen this course and was responsible for the development of the country, Kazakhstan started advancing.

Sultan Sartayev, academic of National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan:
- After studying the experience of other countries, we developed a bill on establishing the post of president. In this project, we stipulated dividing unitarian power into three: legislative, executive and juridical. For the first time, we formed the fundamentals of dividing the power into three branches which was the beginning.

The first election and the first inauguration ceremony were thought out thoroughly. According to those who were present, the guests of honour and formal atmosphere made the moment both exciting and unforgettable.

Kuanysh Sultanov, deputy of Parliament Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan:
- When the flag-bearers carried in the flag and gave it to the president and then put it into the flagpole, Nursultan Abishevich somehow felt that it would fall down. We didn’t know what would happen next and he just jumped out of his seat, turned and caught the flag and put it in its place. We considered it as a good sign and thought that the flag of Kazakhstan would be raised and would never fall down.

Throughout the course of 17 years the name of Nursultan Nazarbayev became the trademark of Kazakhstan. He is the first president, a competent politician and a person who managed to create a warm atmosphere for more than a hundred different nationalities living together and who constitute a united nation. This person is known to the world not only as the head of a young state, but also as a strong person, a politician who calls for peace, disarmament and integration for the common good. By the efforts of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the country has become a member of several military and political alliances and thanks to his actions, it will chair the OSCE in 2010.
