Baku hosts plenary meeting of European Commission for Efficiency of Justice

Baku, July 3 (AzerTAc). The 23rd plenary meeting of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) has today kicked off in Baku. President of the CEPEJ John Stacey and other officials, as well as the members of the commission visited Azerbaijan to attend the event. Prior to the meeting, the participants visited the Alley of Honors and put flowers at the tomb of national leader Heydar Aliyev. They also laid flowers at the grave of prominent ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva. They then visited the Alley of Martyrs to commemorate Azerbaijani heroes who gave their lives for the country’s independence and territorial integrity. A solemn ceremony to open the plenary meeting of the CEPEJ then was held at the “JW Marriott Hotel Absheron”. Azerbaijani Minister of Justice, Chairman of the Judicial-Legal Council of the country Fikret Mammadov, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan Ramiz Rzayev, Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, Council of Europe Philippe Boillat, President of the CEPEJ John Stacey, officials of the Ministry of Justice, members of the Judicial-Legal Council and others attended the opening of the meeting. Minister Fikret Mammadov made a speech at the event and hailed Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the Council of Europe, as well as the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ). Addressing the event, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan Ramiz Rzayev noted that the country was cooperating with the Council of Europe and the CEPEJ in the judicial-legal sphere. Other speakers at the event highlighted the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, as well as the fact of occupation of 20 per cent of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia. Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, Council of Europe Philippe Boillat also addressed the meeting and thanked Azerbaijan for excellent organization of the CEPEJ plenary meeting in Baku. Mr. Boillat spoke of the transparency of the judicial activity and noted the importance of the independence of the justice authorities in the legal states. President of the CEPEJ John Stacey then delivered a speech at the plenary meeting. Mr. Stacey also noted Azerbaijan’s active participation in the CEPEJ and the country’s positive experience in the election of judges. Following the speeches, the meeting continued with the issues on the agenda of the CEPEJ plenary meeting. The meeting will also feature discussions of a number of important issues, including the examination of the report titled “European judicial systems – Edition 2014” in view of its adoption. The event also will see an information seminar organized by the Ministry of Justice on the activity of the CEPEJ.
