Deputy PM Razakov, IAEA head discuss issues of strengthening technical co-op

Bishkek, Dec.3, 2019 /Kabar/. Within the framework of working trip to the Republic of Austria, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Jenish Razakov took part in the Second Special Session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the press service of the Government reported. The main purpose of the Special Session was to appoint Rafael Mariano Grossi from Argentina as Director General of the IAEA. At the same time, Deputy PM Razakov and IAEA Head Rafael Mariano Grossi held a bilateral meeting on the margins of the Special Session, during which they discussed further steps to strengthen technical cooperation. Jenish Razakov noted the Kyrgyz Republic considers the Agency as one of the important and reliable partners, and the state attaches special importance to further rapprochement of relations. He expressed gratitude for the support provided to the country, and noted the technical assistance serves to strengthen radiation and nuclear safety, improve the quality of medical services in the field of nuclear medicine for the population of the republic, which is one of the priority tasks of the state, and solve the problems of uranium tailings. Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed his readiness to support the efforts of Kyrgyzstan in the fight against cancer, and noted the Agency will continue to cooperate with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic within its mandate. At the end of the meeting, the sides expressed confidence that the implementation of the cooperation potential will serve to further strengthen cooperation and effective partnership between the IAEA and the Kyrgyz Republic. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA was established as an autonomous organisation on 29 July 1957. Though established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute, the IAEA reports to both the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.
