EU not to finance wire fence along Turkish-Greek border

BRUSSELS (A.A) - February 7, 2012 - EU Commission said that it would not finance 10-kilometer wire fence which will be placed along Turkish-Greek border. A wire fence will be built along Turkish-Greek border to prevent illegal migrants' entry into Greece.  Michele Cercone, spokesman for European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom, said on Tuesday that Greece applied to commission for the financing of the wire, adding that the commission decided not to finance as the wire fence was unnecessary. Cercone said that fences and walls along borders were "temporary solutions", adding that the commission also rejected similar demands from member countries. Cercone noted that they gave 215 million euro to Greece between 2007 and 2010 for fight against illegal migration, adding that they gave another 90 million euro to Greece in 2012 for the same purpose.
