Expert Believes United States Will Attack Syria

Jakarta, Sept 11 (Antara) - International relations observer from the University of Indonesia Makmur Keliat believes that the United States will choose a military strike to depose the Syrian President Bashar al- Assad regime than democratic transition. "So what the American doing is the rapid and radical regime change strategy concept that uses military intervention," Makmur said here Wednesday. Makmur said that the U.S. has their own interest in overthrowing Bashar regime as it is considered not in line with the Washington plan and its allies in the Middle East region. Makmur said that Assad regime is not supporting the interest of US and Israel and considered to build a closer relation to Iran. Makmur said that the U.S. transparency and democracy measures in Syria will not be done because of the current country`s political processes. The length of the US strike to Syria would also affect to the regional war in the Middle East region. If the US managed to launch a short period of war and overthrow Bashar regime then the escalation could be minimized, he said. "How fast the US strike would be determined by the U.S. intelligence information prior to action taken to see the vulnerable points of the war," he said. Makmur also estimated that the US strike to Syria would be done in less than two weeks period. The military attack step is considered as a quick way to achieve the US desired goal but not necessarily creates democratic stability due to such action. Makmur then cited when Iraq and Afghanistan who require a long time to build a democracy and the resistance emerging from some groups that support the regime. "Building a democratic regime takes a long time after it was torn down by a military regime," he said.
