Georgian parliament to ratify agreement with Turkey on Marneuli Aerodrome upgrade

Georgia, Tbilisi, 20 Feb. / Trend N.Kirtskhalia /
The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Security has examined the documents submitted by the President of Georgia for ratification. Among them are agreements between Georgia and Turkey on cooperation in the military area and financial assistance.
According to the documents, Turkey will provide Georgia 900,000 Turkish lira in dollar equivalent for the purchase of goods, provision of services for military purposes and modernisation of the Marneuli Aerodrome, the parliamentary press service told Trend on Wednesday.
The Committee supported ratification of the agreements submitted. Committee members also discussed the legislative initiative of the president of Georgia to amend the Law on State Compensations and State Academic Scholarships.
According to committee chairman, Irakli Sesiashvili, the Government presented its position on this initiative. It believes the draft law is presented in violation of the 67th article of the Constitution of Georgia, according to which the right of a legislative initiative may only be used by the president of Georgia in exceptional cases.
"In this case, however, there are no arguments on the uniqueness of this legislative initiative", he said.
However, Irakli Sesiashvili noted that a similar draft law has already been initiated by the Cabinet and discussed at the first reading.
The committee voted for the legislative initiative of the president of Georgia and recorded a negative position.
