Georgian President: Armed forces are out of political expediency

Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 6 /Trend N.Kirtzkhalia/ The armed forces are out of political expediency, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said during the presentation of new chief of the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Colonel Irakli Dzneladze at the Ministry of Defence. Saakashvili stressed that the development of the armed forces will not be halted, the presidential administration said. "The armed forces are higher than the identity of any of us. We can not stop the development of the armed forces. We exchanged views on the issue with the Minister of Defence. The Ministry of Defence also intends to continue the path towards NATO," the president said. Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania noted that despite the different positions of the Government of Bidzina Ivanishvili and the opposition on a range of issues, the Georgian army is a source of pride for both political parties.
