Lebanese president says Arab League’s Syria suspension was hasty

TEHRAN, Dec.1(MNA) – Arab League indeed committed a “precipitous act” by suspending Syria’s membership and imposing economic sanctions on the country, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said in a meeting with Iranian ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi in Beirut on Wednesday. The Arab League suspended Syria on November 12. Syria, Lebanon and Yemen voted against the resolution and Iraq abstained. All other 18 members voted for the suspension of Syria’s membership. Syria's ambassador Youssef Ahmed called the decision “illegal” and contrary to the league's internal charter. Suleiman described the developments in Syria as very “sensitive”. For his part, Roknabadi said Iran supports Damascus against conspiracies of the United States and the Zionist regime. Suleiman also appreciated the Islamic Republic’s stance toward Lebanon and thanked Tehran for supporting peace and stability in Lebanon and the region in general. Roknabadi also conveyed the views of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the recent developments in the region to President Suleiman. Suleiman and Roknabadi also stressed the expansion of bilateral ties and implementation of the concluded agreements.
