Time will show futility of Harper’s support of Israel

TEHRAN, Nov. 12 (MNA) -- In Western politics, terms and expressions such as terrorism, justice, human rights, peace, security, and freedom are frequently misused in the West’s confrontations with other countries and cultures. For example, the Palestinian freedom fighters are called terrorists. Iraq and Afghanistan were invaded using similar pretexts. This type of propagandistic language is also used to make it appear that certain countries should not have access to nuclear energy. Through their hegemony over the media industry, the Westerners have been able to deceive many people, even though the terminology is still completely spurious. The policies adopted by the Canadian government provide a clear example of such a hypocritical approach toward various issues. The Canadian government claims to be proud of its humanitarian gestures, although it has violated human rights in dealing with its own citizens, especially the First Nations, on myriad occasions. Canada has made extensive use of the talent of immigrants, who are mostly educated and move to the country in search of better job opportunities. However, in most cases, the immigrants must deal with the xenophobia of government officials. This xenophobia toward Arabs, Asians, Africans, and other immigrants has led to a great deal of discrimination and racism in the policies adopted by the government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper toward the country’s own citizens in areas such as health care, housing, education, and employment. The policy adopted by Harper on the issue of Palestine is another sign of his government’s racist stance. Providing all-out support for Israeli aggression and using every opportunity to deny the rights of the Palestinians are some of the main elements of the Canadian policy toward the Palestine issue. Following are some instances of this one-sided policy: (1) In January 2011, a conference called the Forum for the Future was held in Doha, Qatar, which was attended by the representatives of the United States and Canada. The participants of the conference, which was held to find a Western solution for the Palestinian issue, did not express approval for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. This indicates that Western governments cannot even agree on what they have promised as the solution to the dispute. (2) The neoconservative government of Stephen Harper has insisted on blindly supporting the Zionist regime, even at the expense of the interests of the Canadian people. Independent media outlets are criticizing this policy, but meanwhile, the Canadian government is making efforts to criminalize criticism of Israel and expressions of any skepticism about its dubious history. The Canadian government is opposed to any actions at the United Nations which are against Israel, such as the Goldstone report, which condemned the Zionist regime for the violence and atrocities committed during the December 2008-Janaury 2009 Gaza war. It was the only government that supported the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in May 2010, which left nine Turkish citizens dead. More recently, Canadian government officials announced that the country would not participate in the third Durban conference, which was held last September, just as they boycotted the previous edition of the gathering. Canada was one of the only countries that did not attend the conference, which clearly indicates how isolated it has become due to its support of the Zionist regime. The Canadian government’s failure to gain enough votes at the UN General Assembly for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council in 2010 was another clear indication of its isolation. Canadian opposition groups and parties say the country’s isolation is the direct result of the pro-Israeli policy of Harper’s government. (3) The Canadian government’s recent request that the Palestinian Authority dismiss its charge d’affaires in Ottawa is another pro-Israeli move, which was made because she put a link to a movie showing a Palestinian girl crying and reading a poem denouncing Israeli oppression and injustice on her Twitter account. (4) The prime minister himself is regarded as one of the prominent figures in the Islamophobia campaign. Insisting on using the expression “Islamic terrorism” and calling this alleged phenomenon the most serious threat to international peace and security are some of the main components of Harper’s discourse, which is reminiscent of the rhetoric of George W. Bush, John Bolton, and Avigdor Lieberman. The Harper government’s condemnation of UNESCO for accepting Palestine as a member was its latest move in defense of the Zionist regime. Canadian citizens have held many demonstrations in which they protested against the racist policies of their government, including its pro-Zionist stance. If this trend continues, at some point the Canadian government will surely understand the futility of its one-sided policies in support of the dubious entity of Israel, just as many other governments in the West have come to this conclusion.
