Tunisia's ruling party leader calls for arming Syrian opposition
ANKARA (A.A) - February 26, 2012 - Leader of Tunisia's ruling party has called for arming the opposition movement in Syria fighting against Bahsar Al-Assad's violent crackdown.
"If friends of the dictatorship is giving weapons to the dictatorship, then friends of the revolutionaries should give weapons to the revolutionaries," Ennahdha leader Rached Ghannouchi told the Anadolu Agency Sunday over the phone.
Ghannouchi said Syrian opposition movement should be supported in their fight against the Syrian government which Ghannouchi said was backed by Russia and China.
Ghannouchi said a meeting of the Friends of the Syrian People in Tunis earlier this week was helpful in alienating the Assad regime, adding that it showed Tunisia's and international community's solidarity with the Syrian people.
"Russia, China and Iran have already their support behind the Syrian dictatorship. But there is no foreign intervention to oust the existing Syrian regime by military force, which we hope would never be case," Ghannouchi said.
