Turkey's EU minister calls for more democracy to exit economic crisis
DAVOS (A.A) - January 25, 2012 - Turkey's European Union Minister and Chief Negotiator for accession talks Egemen Bagis on Wednesday urged European countries to go for more democracy to find a way out of the economic crisis.
"We have overcome our own economic crisis by investing in democracy and I offer you to do the same," Bagis told a session in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Bagis said Europe's economic crisis had evolved into a political one which forced some countries to quit their elected leaders to bring technocrat governments such as in Greece and Italy.
"The bigger question is that whether the EU will legitimize democracy deficit when fighting their economic deficits. Finding a balance between economy and democracy will be a real test for the Union," Bagis said.
Bagis also attended the World Economic Forum opening reception.
