Turkish warplanes to get in 2013 indigenous identification system
IZMIR (A.A) - January 16, 2012 - An indigenous identification friend and foe, or IFF, system is set to begin to be installed on Turkish warplanes as of next year, the system's co-developer has said.
"All of our fighter jets will be working on this single system and they will be able to identify each other. In the past we bought this technology from abroad. Today, we are producing it on our own and the system will be installed on the planes next year," said Mujdat Altay, CEO of Turkey-based telecommunications infrastructure provider NETAS.
The IFF systems enable military and national interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles, or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator.
Altay said a similar system currently in use in Turkish warplanes was a foreign-made analog system, adding that the new indigenous digital system would be a much more sophisticated.
