UAE presents its human rights experience at Arab League

Cairo: Ambassador of UAE to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhaheri, yesterday at the League of Arab League gave a presentation on its experience in promoting human rights and its commitment to the relevant international conventions and instruments and its national laws. In the presentation given at the fifth session of the Arab Human Rights Committee, Ambassador Al Dhaheri, highlighted the UAE first periodical report on human rights which was submitted in accordance with Paragraph 1 of Article 48 of Arab Charter on Human Rights which UAE endorsed in 2008 by virtue of Decree No. 93. He noted that UAE did not express any reservations on the articles of the Charter. The report describes the human rights situation on the ground. The ambassador said that UAE national entities prepared the said report out of the country's commitment to, and respect for the rights and freedoms stated in Arab Charter on Human Rights. UAE was among the first seven Arab states to deposit their instruments for ratifying the Charter which entered into force on 16th March 2008, he noted emphasising that the Charter was the first declaration of its kind in the Arab region to take into consideration the common denominators between Arab countries such as Arabic language, culture, traditions and history. Ambassador Al Dhaheri said, "UAE considers its national report as a continuation of an action plan it launched on 2nd December 1971, when UAE was established, in order to achieve the aspirations of its people to enjoy all their rights and basic freedoms provided for in its constitution and national legislations." "UAE is determined to continue its work to add to its achievements in the area of protecting and enhancing human rights as well as to interact positively with the relevant universal practices," added Ambassador Al Dhaheri. The first periodical national report on human rights was prepared by UAE national institutions and civil associations in keeping with the country's commitment to the observance and implementation of all human rights principles, charters and treaties which seek to safeguard human dignity, achieve equality, social justice and equality of opportunity for all and create a better life, greater stability and enhance the country's international standing. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
