UAE representative addresses HRC's interactive dialogue on trafficking in persons

GENEVA, 18th June, 2015 (WAM) -- The UAE Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva, Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, delivered on Tuesday the country's speech before the Human Right Council's interactive dialogue with Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children in Geneva. Al Zaabi welcomed Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, and commended her report, particularly chapter 3 which addresses emerging trends and challenges, including trafficking in persons and economic trends and trafficking and mixed migration flows. He stated that there were large numbers of workers with contracts in the country. Al Zaabi highlighted the multi-faceted approach adopted by the UAE to fight trafficking, which includes prevention, pursuing legal processes, punishment, protecting the victims and enhancing international cooperation. He also underlined the enactment of federal law no. 1 for 2015 which provides for further rights to the victims, as well as exchange of information and best practices with the civil society and international community. "Thanks to the effective measures taken by the UAE, the number of reported victims dropped significantly to 15 in 2014, compared to 19 in 2013 and 47 in 2012," he added. – Emirates News Agency, WAM – http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395282049918.html
