UN does not have a clear approach toward Afghanistan: Ahmadinejad

TEHRAN, March 27 (MNA) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with the United Nations envoy to Afghanistan, Jan Kubis, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on Monday. In the meeting, Ahmadinejad stated that the United Nations’s main problem in dealing with issues related to Afghanistan is the fact that it has not adopted a “clear” approach toward the country. “At a certain juncture, the United Nations supported NATO military forces, and it did not become clear whether it is seeking to resolve problems of NATO military forces and occupiers or to restore peace and fundamental rights of the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said. Ahmadinejad added, “Many Afghan people are being killed every day by occupiers, and their rights… which have been recognized by the United Nations, are being violated. And we are witnessing that problems (in Afghanistan), such as terrorism and the transit of drugs, have spread to other regional countries.” The United Nations’ main responsibility is to restore people’s rights, he said, adding that it is not a great demand if the Afghan people say they want NATO forces to leave their country, he commented. The Iranian president went on to say that the people of the region, including the Afghan people, have lost their confidence in international organizations since they have always made efforts to justify atrocities that certain Western countries commit. The UN should try to win back people’s confidence, he said. During the meeting, the UN envoy briefed Ahmadinejad on the measures that the organization has made to help resolve problems facing Afghanistan.
