Protection of Biodiversity Brisk in DPRK

Pyongyang, May 22 (KCNA) -- May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity.

The DPRK, which signed the Convention on Biological Diversity, has made positive efforts in different fields of national undertakings in order to protect and use the biological diversity in a sustainable way.

Many successes have been made in the course and the medium and long-term work for protecting biological diversity is being promoted.

The DPRK is expediting the drawing up of a nationwide master plan for land development reflecting mid- and long-term greening plans in keeping with its specific conditions, thus ensuring the protection of biological diversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.

It makes great efforts to protect forest biodiversity, create landscapes in streets and villages across the country and improve the urban ecosystem by building parks and resorts on the highest level.

It has promoted the drawing up of a nationwide water-conservancy strategy for putting the water control on a scientific basis and its implementation.

Good results have been achieved in the protection of biodiversity on the coast and territorial waters as the work for protecting and multiplying the aquatic resources of the country was promoted in a planned and practical way.

Meanwhile, a work has been promoted to survey and appraise the reserves in the country and expand their areas by stage, thus protecting biodiversity peculiar to and rich in the country.

Through the survey of over 90 reserves and the key areas related to the bio-diversity in recent years, scientific research institutions in the relevant field confirmed that the number of species of animals like bear and water-deer markedly increased than before and many unrecorded creatures were witnessed.

Every year, the DPRK is widely conducting different agit-prop activities for raising social recognition of the work for protecting the biodiversity on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity. -0-
