27 Malaysian Athletes Qualify For London Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- A total of 27 national athletes have so far confirmed their places to participate in the London Olympic Games this July, said Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president, Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar. He said OCM was still waiting for news from several world's sports bodies for the admission of Malaysian athletes including two in athletics, four in swimming and a single reserve slot for Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty in the women's badminton doubles. "We are quite confident with the better quality of our athletes this time, we will secure at least seven additional places for the London Olympics," he told reporters after chairing the London Olympics selection committee meeting at Wisma OCM, here, Monday. The 27 who have booked their places in the biggest summer games are eight in diving, six (badminton), five (cycling), four (archery, and one each in fencing, shooting, sailing and women's weightlifting. Malaysia had sent the biggest contingent, with 64 athletes, to the 1964 Olympic Games held in Tokyo. -- BERNAMA
