Asian Games-2011 will be held in Kazakhstan

Almaty, April 11, 2009 (Khabar) - The president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has announced that the winter Asian games will happen in Almaty. The head of state promised to allocate money for the construction of extra sport units. Recently, it was planned to cut the number of kinds of sports which will be included in the programme of the Asian Games but the president said that it is necessary to finish the reconstruction of Medeo and Shymbulak. The government is to allocate 27 billion tenge for the development of sports infrastructure in Almaty and the reconstruction of the “Medeo” skating-rink, ski jumps, the Sport Palace and the Shymbylak ski resort.

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of RK:
- We are not going to move the Asian Games to Astana.

Today, Almaty residents are very happy with the decision of the president.

- I think that it is good advertising for Kazakhstan.

- It is expected that Kazakhstan will be visited by plenty of tourists. I believe that this situation will promote the construction campaign, investments and the creation of new jobs.

It is planned to run the Asian Games at the end of January, 2011. After reconstruction, the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace will seat five thousand spectators. The programme of Asian Games will include ice-skating and short-track contests. In 2011, the Medeo skating-rink will mark its 60th anniversary. The “Samruk-Kazyna” National Capital Fund is to allocate an extra 100 million US dollars for the construction of new ski lifts. Also, it is planned to use 5 billion tenge for the construction of two ski-jumps. The Olympic Committee hopes that Kazakhstan’s sportsmen will carry off 25 golden medals and win the Asian Games.
