Qatar Eye Historic Achievement as FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Draws Near
Doha, November 10 (QNA) - World Cup debutants Qatar eye impressive results in FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, due to kick off Nov. 20, benefitting from their home-field and home crowd advantages.
The Qatari national team seeks a historic achievement that echoes those of other teams in their first World Cup appearances such as Uruguay, Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Ghana.
The hosts Qatar have well prepared for the tournament by recurrent training camps that included numerous trial matches and interspersed with official regional, Asian and international matches.
Historically speaking, hosts Uruguay were crowned champions of the first-ever World Cup in 1930 after defeating arch-rivals Argentina 4-2. This triumph came after two successive gold medals in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games respectively.
Drawn in Group A, Qatar will take on Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium on Nov. 20. Then, Qatar national team will play against AFCON champions Senegal on Nov. 25 at Al Thumama Stadium, and the Netherlands on Nov. 29 at Al Bayt venue.
Since Qatar won the World Cup hosting bid in 2010, Qatar kicked off a well-built preparation program in line with the country's logistic preparedness for the world's biggest sporting event. This program saw the three-time Arabian Gulf Cup winners Qatar securing gold at the AFC Cup in the UAE after a 3-1 victory over Japan. Also, they claimed gold at the 2014 WAFF championship and the 2006 Asian Games.
Spanish coach Felix Sanchez, who was hired at the helm of the senior side in July 2017 following a spell with the U-20s and U-23s , seek an impressive achievement with the senior side. (QNA)
