BAE Systems To Further Support Chevening Scholarship Programme

LANGKAWI, March 18 (Bernama) -- Global defence and aerospace company, BAE Systems has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the British High Commission in Malaysia to further support the Chevening Scholarship programme. The MoU was signed during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2015 (LIMA) between the British High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell and the Managing Director of BAE System (Combat Air) Martin Taylor. The agreement was witnessed by British Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Philip Dunne on Tuesday. "This year, Malaysia has benefited from a tripling of Foreign Office funding, making it one of the largest recipients of the Chevening Scholarship around the world. "This bodes well with the 40 percent increase in the number of eligible Chevening scholarship applications for the academic year 2015/16," said Treadell in a statement here, Wednesday. She said, as the United Kingdom and Malaysia relationship continued to grow from strength to strength, the UK remained firmly committed to offering talented Malaysians the opportunity to pursue tertiary education in the United Kingdom. The Chevening Scholarship programme is the United Kingdom's global scholarship scheme which gives future leaders from across the globe the opportunity to a one-year Master's degree in a number of fields in the country. Meanwhile BAE System's Regional Managing Director John Brosnan said, the signing demonstrated the company's enduring commitment in supporting relationship with the Malaysian government. "Education represents one of the most long-standing and successful bilateral ties between the UK and Malaysia," he said, adding that its support to the scholarship provided opportunity for Malaysian students to develop their capabilities and expand their experience. -- BERNAMA
