Frauds, Intrusions, Cyber Harassment Tops List Of Cyber Security Incidents

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- CyberSecurity Malaysia has received a total of 6,800 cyber security incident reports as of July 2015 with fraud, intrusions and cyber harassment topping the list. Its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab, said 2,000 fraud incidents were reported, followed by intrusions (814 incidents) and cyber harassments (270 incidents). Other cyber security incidents were content-related, denial of service, intrusion attempt, malicious codes, spam and vulnerabilities report, he said. Amirudin said exposure to the risk of cyber threat was higher now as almost all private and public sectors were increasingly depending on the information and communication technology in their business operations and services. However, CyberSecurity Malaysia did not have the full data of the incidents that happened in Malaysia as it was not mandatory to report and individuals or organisation involved could have handled it themselves, he said. "(Hence), we urged the organisation and public to report as we need the report to understand and know more in order to help more," he said. Amirudin said this at the one-day Fortinet's Security Symposium and in conjunction with the Cyber Security Malaysia Awards, Conference and Exhibition here from Sept 6 to 10. He said the weakest link of the cyber security was people and not technology. "Hence, there is a need for people at large to be educated with basic awareness of security culture and not to easily share their confidential information," he said.. On other development, Amirudin said, Malaysia was ranked third, tied with Oman and Australia, in the Global Cybersecurity Index 2014 conducted by United Nation's International Telecom Union among 193 counties and behind the US and Canada, which was announced early this year. He said this was based on fve indexes -- governance, legal, technical, capacity building and international cooperation.
