Iran produces laser diode

Tehran, March 11, IRNA - Researchers at Iran's National Laser Research Center have designed and manufactured a laser diode (LD) and Erbium YAG (Er:YAG) laser. The LD is an electrically pumped semiconductor laser in which the active laser medium is formed by a p-n junction of a semiconductor diode similar to that found in a light-emitting diode. The field of medicine, especially dentistry, has found many new uses for diode lasers. The shrinking size of the units and their increasing user-friendliness makes them very attractive to clinicians for minor soft tissue procedures, Iran Daily wrote. The 800 nm – 980 nm units have a high absorption rate for hemoglobin, which make them ideal for soft tissue applications, where hemostasis is necessary. Er:YAG lasers have been used for laser resurfacing of human skin. Example uses include treating acne scarring, deep rhytides and melasma. In addition to being absorbed by water, the output of Er:YAG lasers is also absorbed by hydroxyapatite, which makes it a good laser for cutting bone as well as soft tissue. Bone surgery applications have been found in oral surgery, dentistry, implant dentistry and otolaryngology.
