'Iron Man' Inspires Two Young Scientists To Create Holographic Images At APCYS'15
By Amirul Mohd Sajadi
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- Holographic images projected through a prototype using discarded materials invented by two very young students steal the limelight at the Asia Pacific Conference of Young Scientists 2015 (APCYS'15), here Tuesday.
The duo said they got the idea after watching Iron Man films.
Eleven-year-old Dhruv Maheshwari, who is also the youngest participant of the conference, said that he and his partner Aakarshan Mishra, 13, were very passionate about the hologram technology featured in the films.
"From there, we started googling on how the hologram actually functions before we built the prototype using materials we found around our house," he told Bernama here Tuesday.
The duo's prototype used only a wooden box, several computer fans, dry ice and a plastic container to project three-dimensional (3D) and free-standing images.
The India-born student, who aspires to become a scientist, believed that the technology, if use correctly, could prevent robbery in shopping centres and museums.
"There are other things that the hologram could be useful for, but none were commercialised as of now," Maheswari said.
Prior to this, the duo's invention had also won several national-level competitions. This is their first time participating in a international event.
The APCYS'15, which began last Sunday and will end on Friday, is organised by the Malaysian Royal Military College.
Approximately 100 students aged between 11 and 17 years from ASEAN member countries are taking part in the conference held at the International Youth Centre, near here.
