We have big plans - Stefan Tarkovich new coach of Kyrgyz national football team

Bishkek, May 2, 2023. / Kabar /. Stefan Tarkovich arrived in Bishkek and signed a contract with the Kyrgyz Football Union to take up the position of head coach of the national team, the press service of the KFU said.

The signing of the agreement took place today. The term of the agreement is until June 30, 2024.

“I am grateful to the president of the Kyrgyz Football Union for the trust. We have big plans, we will try to do everything according to a plan,” the new head coach said.

The KFU added that the signed document provides that Tarkovich will oversee the national football team of Kyrgyzstan, and domestic specialists and his assistants who arrived with him will help him in the coaching staff.

Tarkovich was confirmed as the head coach of the Kyrgyz national team on April 24. The new coach has a UEFA Pro coaching license. Previously, he was an assistant coach and head coach of the Slovakian national team, and also acted as an analyst for UEFA. Among the achievements of Tarkovich as an assistant coach of the national team of Slovakia:

  • winning the Bangkok Cup in March 2018;
  • qualifying for the play-offs of EURO 2016 in July 2016;
  • the highest position of the Slovakian national team in the FIFA ranking (14th place) in August 2015.

As head coach of the Slovakian national team, he led the team to UEFA EURO 2020 in November 2020.

The previous coach of the national team Alexander Krestinin left his post in early April by mutual agreement with the KFU. The Russian coach has led the national team of the republic since 2014. Under him, the team reached the final of the Asian Cup for the first time and reached the 1/8 finals. In 2024, the national team will play in the continental championship for the second time. The tournament will be held in January in Qatar.

Also during his management, the team improved its position in the FIFA rankings - in 2018, the team took 75th place, rising from 146th. Kyrgyzstan has been among the top 100 teams in the world for several years.
