Red Cross officials welcome 63 ethnic Koreans who resided on Russia's Far East island of Sakhalin upon their arrival at the port of Donghae, 280 kilometers east of Seoul, on March 17, 2023, for permanent resettlement in their mother country with the help of the Korean National Red Cross. Japan forcibly mobilized about 150,000 Koreans to work in coal mines, pulp mills and military facilities on Sakhalin during World War II, when the southern part of the Russian island was under Japanese control. After the war, about 43,000 Koreans were stranded, becoming "stateless people." (Yonhap)
