Homeless man arrested for causing fire at Thai-Belgian Bridge

BANGKOK, March 24 (TNA) - The police on Friday took a homeless man to the fire- damaged Thai – Belgian bridge for a re-enactment of how he started the fire late last month. The man, identified as Samran Sukkhiew admitted throwing away a cigarette butt on a bunch of leaves near plastic bins, stored below the bridge but he had no intention of starting a fire. Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Sanit Mahathavorn told a press briefing that the man’s picture was captured by a surveillance camera footage while walking at the base of the bridge just before the fire broke out. The investigation found that he had no links to any political group or any conflict with other homeless people. He was charges of reckless action causing fire and property damage. The punishment could be a maximum of seven years in prison and/or a fine of 14,000 baht. The police will tomorrow seek a court’s approval for his detention. (TNA)
