"Host Town Summit" Held for 2020 Tokyo Games

Tokyo, Feb. 25 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government held on Sunday a meeting among officials from some 130 prefectures and municipalities registered to serve as "host towns" during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. At the "host town summit," held in Tokyo, participants exchanged information on their programs to welcome foreign Olympians and Paralympians participating in the upcoming quadrennial sporting events. Shunichi Suzuki, Japanese minister for the Tokyo Games, called on the local officials to utilize the information they obtained at the meeting in upgrading their programs further. At the gathering, officials from Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, the three northeastern Japan prefectures hit hardest by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, introduced their exchange events with countries and regions that provided them with support after the natural disaster. Officials from Rikuzentakata in Iwate explained its plan to hold a welcome event in which local people will express gratitude to athletes from Singapore and their families for the support the city received from the Southeast Asian nation. To encourage more local communities to become host towns, the central government invited officials of unregistered prefectures and municipalities to the Sunday meeting. Suzuki said that he wants many people to be engaged in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. END
