ICRC Official Hails Iran Experiences In Mine Clearance

Tehran, April 8, IRNA – Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative office in Tehran Olivier Martin hailed Iranˈs experiences in mines clearance as a valuable aid to other countries which are confronting a similar plight.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion of World Mine Awareness Day here on Tuesday, he said exchange of experiences and skills among countries will facilitate safer clearance operations and easier assistance to mine victims.
He said that compared to its neighboring countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran has received less support from the international community despite the scale of its mine clearance and victim assistance activities.
He stressed that 26 years after the end of war with Iraq, which was the longest conflict of the 20th century, Iran has still to deal of the problems afflicting civilian lives.
The ICRC official further pointed to the valuable services provided to the mine victims by various Iranian organizations to improve their living conditions.
Martin said the preventive measures have certainly helped reduce dangers of the fatal arms which continue to claim lives of people even after the conflicts are long over./end
