Parliament of India to have special sitting on Sunday to mark 60 years

New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) Both houses of of India's Parliament will mark the 60th anniversary of their first sitting by holding special sittings on Sunday. Besides discussing the Journey of 60 years of Indian Parliament, there will also be a joint sitting of the two houses on the day which will be addressed by President Pratibha Patil, Vice-President and Rajya Sabha (upper house) Chairman Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. President Patil will also release books brought out by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats to commemorate the occasion. Coins of Rupees 5 and Rs 10 denomination to mark the occasion along with a special stamp will also be released. The first sittings of the newly constituted Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, following elections in late 1951 and early 1952, had been held on May 13, 1952. The sittings of the two houses on Sunday is in commemoration of those meetings. From 1950, when the Indian Constitution had come into operation, till the holding of elections in 1951-52, the Constituent Assembly that had framed the Constitution had continued to function as India's Parliament.
