UN general assembly's head discuss recent developments in Mideast

UNITED NATIONS (A.A) - The president of the 66th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly discussed recent developments in the Middle East with Turkish president on Thursday. A UN statement said Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser debated recent developments in Middle East, particularly crisis in Syria, with Turkish President Abdullah Gul in Ankara. Al-Nasser paid a formal visit to Turkey, and met President Gul in Ankara. During the meeting, Al-Nasser reiterated that a peaceful solution should be found to the crisis in Syria. Gul and Al-Nasser exchanged views on the Istanbul Conference on Mediation that would begin in Istanbul on Friday. The statement quoted Al-Nasser as saying in his meeting with Gul that the Istanbul conference would lay the groundwork for a high-level UN General Assembly meeting on mediation that would take place on May 23.  According to his office, Al-Nasser appreciated Turkey's mediation efforts in the region. Moreover, Al-Nasser met Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu and Deputy Undersecretary Naci Koru and discussed developments in Syria, Libya and Somalia. Al-Nasser will depart from Turkey on February 26 after attending the Istanbul Conference on Mediation.
