Turkey's fm speaks to UN secretary general by phone

WASHINGTON (A.A) - February 12, 2012 - Turkey's foreign minister had a phone talk with the United Nations (UN) secretary general on Saturday. Ahmet Davutoglu, who continues talks in the United States, spoke to Ban Ki-moon by phone and discussed developments in syria. During the phone talk, Davutoglu exchanged views about developments in the wake of a vote on Syria at the UN Security Council, that was vetoed by Russia and China. Davutoglu expressed concern that the situation could be worse in Syria and briefed Ban on Turkey's diplomatic initiatives regarding developments in Syria. On Friday, Davutoglu had said that Turkey launched initiatives at the UN office in Geneva to send humanitarian aid to Syrian people.  Turkey also said it would launch an international initiative regarding Syria after Russian and Chinese veto at the UN Security Council vote. During the phone talk, Ban thanked Turkey for its assistance to Syrian citizens who took shelter in Turkey's territories. Davutoglu and Ban agreed that loss of life in Syria should be halted as soon as possible.
