UN general assembly president: "Syrian issue is really very dangerous issue"

UNITED NATIONS (A.A) - February 15, 2012 - President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser has said that Syrian issue was really very dangerous issue. Speaking to AA correspondent in his UN office, Al-Nasser said that the UN Security Council could not approve a resolution on Syria, as it was vetoed by Ryssia and China, stating that he thought he had to take the responsibility by inviting the UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay to brief the General Assembly about Syria.  "This is very important to focus and put international pressure, we should move forward and try to help the Syrian people. If we don't do it, who will do it," he said. "Syrian issue is really very dangerous issue. There is a problem which I really commend the Arab League to work and to bring solution for this conflict. They managed to convince the Syrian government with a plan to help the government and also to protect the people. Reforming the system, (the election, new government) trying to stop the violence, bloodshed by the military. The Syrian government signed that agreement, but they failed to implement it. In this case, Arap League came to UN Security Council seeking their support, to support their mission and their agreement so to convince the Syrian to comply and implement. But unfortunately as you know the Council failed to do so, because of some disagreement between some members," he said. Al-Nasser said in this case they could not keep silent and keep quiet and just watch the developments. "I issued a statement saying that I was concerned and that what has happened would send a wrong message, there would be more violence, more killing and that is not good for the country because Syria would not be stable and that might lead to civil war, to more problems. In this case to focus on one issue which is very sensitive and very important issue, which is human rights issue, especially as we have a report in December from Human Rights Council (in Geneva). But no member state at that time came to me to raise this issue and I received a phone call from President of Human Rights Council asking me 'what is happening with my report' Also with the Security Council not being able to take action, I thought I have to take the responsibility by inviting the UN Human Rights Commissioner Ms Navi Pillay to brief the General Assembly. This is very important to focus and put international pressure, we should move forward and try to help the Syrian people. If we don't do it, who will do it. That was what happened yesterday," he said.
